Navistar Recalls 2011-2012 Workhorse W62 Chassis for Exhaust Weld Defect

Navistar is recalling 2011-2012 Workhorse W62 commercial chassis because a weld on the exhaust system may fatigue, allowing hot gases to enter the engine compartment and increasing fire risk.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (exhaust weld fatigue) that creates a significant risk of fire, meeting the criteria for a Severe rating.

Plain-English summary

Navistar, Inc. is recalling certain model year 2011-2012 Workhorse W62 Commercial Chassis vehicles manufactured between June 21, 2010, and October 2, 2012. The recall involves 6,481 vehicles.

The defect involves the weld joining the right-hand side exhaust down pipe to the exhaust manifold, which may fatigue. If the weld fails, hot exhaust gases may enter the engine compartment, increasing the risk of a fire.

Navistar will notify owners, and dealers will install support brackets on the right and left hand exhaust down pipes and a catalyst spacer bar to prevent swaying. Any cracked down pipes will be replaced. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on November 17, 2014. Owners may contact Navistar customer service at 1-800-448-7825 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
