Gillig Recalls 2014 Low Floor Buses Due to Air Brake Line Defect

Gillig is recalling 90 model year 2014 Low Floor transit buses because crossed air brake supply lines may cause brake failure, increasing crash risk.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect in the air brake system that can lead to total brake failure and increased crash risk, meeting the criteria for a Severe rating.

Plain-English summary

Gillig LLC is recalling certain model year 2014 Low Floor transit buses manufactured between January 2, 2014, and March 6, 2014. The recall involves 90 vehicles where the air brake system supply lines from the primary and secondary air tanks to the brake valves may have been crossed at the bulkhead during assembly. This defect causes the vehicles to fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 121, "Air Brake Systems."

If the supply lines are crossed and the vehicle loses pressure in the primary tank, the service brake system performance may be reduced. In the event of a total loss of primary tank air pressure, the service brake system will not function. This failure or reduced performance means that applying the brake pedal may not slow or stop the vehicle as expected, increasing the risk of a crash.

Gillig will notify owners, and dealers will correct the installation of the primary and secondary brake supply lines free of charge. The recall began on October 17, 2014. Owners may contact Gillig customer service at 1-800-735-1500 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
