Grand Design Recalls 2014 Momentum Trailers Due to Suspension Bolt Defect

Grand Design is recalling 2014 Momentum 355th, 380th, and 385th fifth wheel trailers because suspension bolts may shear, potentially causing a crash.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (suspension bolts) that can lead to loss of control and a crash, which aligns with the rubric criteria for a Severe (4) rating.

Plain-English summary

Grand Design RV, LLC is recalling certain model year 2014 Momentum 355th, 380th, and 385th fifth wheel trailers. The affected units were manufactured between June 24, 2013, and March 21, 2014, and were built with 8,000lb capacity axles.

The recall addresses a defect where suspension bolts connecting the axle springs to the frame may shear. If these bolts shear, the axle spring may detach from the frame hanger or shackle. A detached spring may result in a loss of control of the trailer, increasing the risk of a crash.

Grand Design will notify owners, and dealers will replace the suspension bolts with ones that have a shorter thread depth, free of charge. The recall began in August 2014. Owners may contact Grand Design customer service at 1-574-825-9679 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
