Fiat 500e Recall: Coolant Leak May Cause Loss of Propulsion
Chrysler is recalling 2013-2014 Fiat 500e vehicles because a coolant leak in the power inverter module may cause a short circuit, leading to loss of propulsion and increased crash risk.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (electrical/propulsion system) where a loss of propulsion while driving increases the risk of a crash, meeting the criteria for a Severe rating.
Plain-English summary
Chrysler Group LLC is recalling certain model year 2013-2014 Fiat 500e Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV) manufactured between September 24, 2012, and April 4, 2014. The recall involves 4,141 vehicles.
The affected vehicles have cooling plates for the Power Inverter Module (PIM) that may leak coolant into areas of the high voltage circuitry. This leak can result in a short circuit that causes the related service fuse to blow. If the service fuse blows, the vehicle will experience a loss of propulsion while driving, which increases the risk of a crash.
Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will replace the PIM free of charge. The recall began in July 2014. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is P23. Owners may also contact the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 or visit www.safercar.gov.
