UCI-FRAM Recalls Ignition Switches for GM Vehicles Due to Stalling Risk
UCI-FRAM is recalling specific ignition switches used in GM vehicles because they may shift out of the run position, causing the engine to stall and disabling air bags.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect where the ignition switch can disable air bags and cause the engine to stall, increasing the risk of personal injury in a crash.
Plain-English summary
UCI-FRAM Group is recalling certain LS1328 and LS1497 ignition switches sold under the brands Wells, Duralast, Airtex, and Carquest. These switches were used for repair and replacement on various General Motors vehicles, including Pontiac, Saturn, and Chevrolet models.
The defect involves the ignition switch potentially moving out of the run position due to the weight of a key ring, road conditions, or other jarring events. If this occurs, the engine will turn off and the air bags will be disabled. This increases the risk of personal injury to occupants in the event of a crash.
Affected vehicles include the 2005-2006 Pontiac Pursuit, 2003-2007 Saturn Ion, 2005-2010 Chevrolet Cobalt, 2006-2009 Pontiac Solstice, 2006-2011 Chevrolet HHR, 2007-2010 Saturn Sky, and 2007-2010 Pontiac G5. UCI-FRAM has notified purchasers to quarantine and return inventory. Switches already installed in vehicles will be replaced by GM dealers free of charge as part of NHTSA recall 14V-047. Owners can contact GM or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline for more information.
