Ohlins Racing AB is recalling steering damper kits for various motorcycles because an incorrectly machined bracket may crack, potentially causing steering to lock at low speeds.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (steering bracket cracking) that can cause steering to lock, leading to personal injury or a crash, which meets the criteria for a Severe rating.
Plain-English summary
Ohlins Racing AB is recalling certain steering damper kits manufactured with an incorrectly machined bracket. These dampers were sold as aftermarket equipment for Yamaha R1, R6, and FZ6; Suzuki TL1000 R and GSX1300R; Honda CB600RR; and Ducati Monster 1000, 748, 848, 916, 996, and 998 motorcycles. The recall also includes universal steering damper kits with part numbers SD 000 through SD 005.
The affected brackets may crack. If a crack occurs in the steering bracket, it may cause the steering to lock at low speeds, which could lead to personal injury or a crash. This recall is an expansion of recall 13E-034 and began in November 2013.
Ohlins will notify distributors and provide customers with a new bracket. Owners may contact Ohlins USA at 1-828-692-4525. Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.safercar.gov.
