HME Recalls 2011-2012 Fire Apparatus Due to Brake Dragging Risk

HME is recalling 11 fire apparatus vehicles because parking brake chambers may leak, causing brakes to drag and overheat, which could result in a fire.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (brake chamber leak) that could result in a fire, meeting the criteria for a Severe rating.

Plain-English summary

HME, Inc. is recalling certain model year 2012 Spectr Fire Apparatus, Spectr Chassis, and 2011-2012 Ferrara Intruder Ember Chassis vehicles. The affected vehicles were manufactured between January 26, 2011, and November 7, 2012. A total of 11 vehicles are included in this recall.

The defect involves axles equipped with an MGM Type 24 J-series piston parking brake chamber. In these vehicles, the brake chambers may leak pressure, which allows the parking brake to drag when it is supposed to be released. This dragging can cause the brake components to overheat. Overheated brake components could result in a fire.

HME will notify owners, and the brake chambers will be inspected and replaced as needed, free of charge. The safety recall is expected to begin on or before May 13, 2013. Owners may contact HME at 1-616-534-1463 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
