Newmar Grand Star Motorhomes Recalled for Brake Performance Issues

Newmar is recalling 2008-2009 Grand Star Class A motorhomes because brake caliper pistons may grow, causing drag and reduced braking performance.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect in the braking system that explicitly states reduced brake performance may lead to a vehicle crash, meeting the criteria for a Severe rating.

Plain-English summary

Newmar Corporation is recalling certain model year 2008 and 2009 Grand Star Class A motorhomes built on Freightliner Custom Chassis (FCCC) between January 25, 2007, and May 22, 2009. A total of 70 vehicles are affected by this recall.

The recalled motorhomes are equipped with Bosch hydraulic disc brakes. When exposed to long periods of non-driving, these brakes may experience diametrical brake caliper piston growth and reduced piston to bore clearance. This condition can lead to brake drag and overheating, resulting in reduced brake performance, which may lead to a vehicle crash.

Owners will be notified by Daimler Trucks/FCCC, and repairs will be performed by authorized FCCC dealers free of charge. An interim letter was mailed by DTNA on August 6, 2012. Owners may contact Newmar at 1-574-773-7791 or Daimler Trucks at 1-800-547-0712.
