Kia Borrego Brake Pedal Mount Recall Increases Injury Risk in Collisions
Kia is recalling 2009 Borrego vehicles because brake pedal mounts may break in a collision, allowing the vehicle to roll and increasing injury risk.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (brake pedal mount failure) that increases the risk of personal injury in a collision, meeting the criteria for a Severe rating.
Plain-English summary
Kia Motors Corporation is recalling certain model year 2009 Borrego vehicles manufactured between May 2, 2008, and January 20, 2009. These vehicles are equipped with non-adjustable brake pedals. The recall affects 21,912 vehicles.
The defect involves certain pedal mounts that may have a fiberglass composition. In a collision where the impact does not immobilize the vehicle, these mounts may break off. This failure would allow the vehicle to roll, requiring the driver to stop the vehicle with the parking brake or risking a second impact, which increases the risk of personal injury.
Kia will notify owners, and dealers will replace the brake pedal mount free of charge. The recall began on June 15, 2012. Owners may contact Kia Consumer Assistance Center at 1-800-333-4542 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
