Triad Trailer Recalls Two Boat Trailers Due to Brake Actuator Defect

Triad Trailers is recalling two boat trailers because defective brake actuator pumps may fail, increasing crash risk.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (brake actuator failure) that can result in the loss of braking effort and increase the risk of a crash, meeting the criteria for a Severe rating.

Plain-English summary

Triad Trailers LLC is recalling one model year 2011 J105 boat trailer and one model year 2012 J111 boat trailer. These specific units are equipped with a Dexter Electric/Hydraulic (E/H) brake actuator pump that may not have been properly heat treated.

The improper heat treatment can cause premature wear of critical components in the pumps, potentially rendering the unit inoperable. Since the E/H brake actuator provides braking power to the trailer brakes, failure of the actuator can result in the loss of braking effort by the trailer, increasing the risk of a crash.

Triad will notify owners, and Dexter will replace the actuators free of charge. The safety recall began on May 30, 2012. Owners may contact Triad Trailers at 1-919-782-6007 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
