McNeilus Recalls 2012 Autocar ACX Trucks for Brake Defect
McNeilus is recalling certain 2012 Autocar ACX refuse trucks because incorrectly reconnected air lines may cause the tag axle brakes to fail when the axle is lowered.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect in the braking system that explicitly increases the risk of a crash, meeting the criteria for a Severe rating.
Plain-English summary
McNeilus Truck & Manufacturing is recalling certain model year 2012 Autocar ACX refuse trucks manufactured between March 17, 2011, and February 10, 2012. The recall addresses a potential defect in the power train axle assembly.
During the manufacturing process, the tag axle on the chassis may be removed. If the two air lines are not reinstalled in the correct location, the tag axle brakes will apply when the axle is lifted but will not function when the axle is lowered. This defect could result in reduced braking ability, which increases the risk of a crash.
McNeilus will notify owners and inspect the vehicles to perform repairs free of charge. The safety recall began on May 2, 2012. Owners may contact McNeilus at 507-374-6321 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
