Great Lakes Recalls 2002-2007 Trailers for Non-Compliant Air Brake Systems

Great Lakes is recalling 226 model year 2002-2007 trailers because the installed air brake device lacks required anti-lock features and warning lights, increasing crash risk.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect in the braking system that explicitly increases the risk of a crash, meeting the criteria for a Severe rating.

Plain-English summary

Great Lakes Manufacturing Inc. is recalling 226 model year 2002-2007 trailers, including Single Drop, Wallboard, Tag Along, Rail Chassis, Crib Drop, Pup, Economy, and Dump models. The recall involves trailers equipped with the MSQR 5000 Differential Pressure Regulator/Quick Release Valve device manufactured by Air Brake Systems.

The recalled device does not contain the requisite anti-lock brake system or warning light, failing to conform to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard Number 121, "Air Brake Systems." These deficiencies increase the risk of a crash because the system does not meet the definition of an ABS required by the standard and lacks a light to warn the operator of an ABS malfunction.

Great Lakes will notify owners and replace the unit with a compliant one free of charge. The recall is expected to begin during January 2012. Owners may contact Great Lakes at 1-920-842-2012 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
