KZRV Recalls Towing Trailers With Fire-Prone Norcold Refrigerators
KZRV is recalling certain towable travel trailers equipped with 1200-series Norcold refrigerators because the safety shut-off devices may not prevent a fire caused by a hydrogen gas leak.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (refrigerator safety mechanism) that poses a risk of fire, which aligns with the 'Severe' criteria for significant injury/property-damage reports or structural defects.
Plain-English summary
KZRV, L.P. is recalling certain towable travel trailers equipped with 1200-series Norcold refrigerators. The affected models include the Durango, Sportsmen, Sportster, Escalade, Inferno, Montego Bay, New Vision, and Sportsmen Lodge, covering model years from 2002 to 2011. The recall addresses a defect in the refrigerators' safety mechanisms.
The refrigerators are equipped with a sensing algorithm or thermal switch designed to shut off power when high temperatures are detected, which helps prevent potential fires. However, the response times of these devices are not sufficient to stop power in time to prevent a fire if a hydrogen gas leak occurs. This defect poses a risk of fire to the vehicle and its occupants.
KZRV is working with Norcold to identify and notify affected owners. Owners will be instructed to contact Norcold dealers to receive the remedy free of charge. The safety recall began on March 3, 2011. Owners may also contact Norcold at 1-800-767-9101 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
