What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (fuel line chafing) with a potential for fire, which aligns with the rubric criteria for a Severe (4) rating.
Plain-English summary
Volkswagen of America, Inc. is recalling certain model year 2006-2010 Jetta, New Beetle, New Beetle Convertible, model year 2009 Jetta Sportwagen, and model year 2007-2009 Rabbit vehicles equipped with 2.5L engines. The recall affects approximately 228,236 vehicles.
The defect involves a small plastic tab on the windshield washer fluid reservoir or a fastening clamp on a power steering hydraulic hose that may be improperly positioned. These components may chafe against an underhood fuel supply line. If chafing occurs, a fuel leak may develop, which could result in a fire in the presence of an ignition source.
Dealers will inspect and, if necessary, replace the underhood fuel line. Depending on the model, dealers will also remove the plastic tab or adjust the fastening clamp to the correct position. This service will be performed free of charge. The safety recall is expected to begin on or before January 31, 2011. Owners may contact Volkswagen at 1-800-822-8987 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
