Navistar Recalls 2006-2008 IC School Buses for Engine Speed Control Defect

Navistar is recalling certain 2006-2008 IC school buses equipped with specific engines due to a defect that may cause sudden, unexpected increases in engine speed.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The source text explicitly states the defect may result in 'property damage, personal injury, or death,' which aligns with the rubric criterion for 'significant injury/property-damage reports' or potential for serious harm, warranting a Severe rating.

Plain-English summary

Navistar, Inc. is recalling certain model year 2006 through 2008 IC BE, RE, and CE school buses manufactured between December 4, 2001, and December 14, 2009. The recall affects vehicles equipped with International VT365 engines having engine calibration PAN2PVR0, PAN2PVR1, or PAN2PWR.

The defect involves the engine's response to a failed open accelerator position sensor circuit. Normally, the engine returns to a low idle speed of 800 RPM and disables the driver's ability to increase speed. However, if the open circuit corrects itself within 30 seconds of initiation, the engine speed could suddenly increase to a high idle speed of 1200 RPM.

This sudden increase to high idle speed may occur without warning, causing a sudden and unexpected shift in vehicle position. This could possibly result in property damage, personal injury, or death. Navistar will notify owners, and dealers will repair the vehicles free of charge. The safety recall began on July 1, 2010. Owners may contact Navistar at 1-800-448-7825 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
