Plain-English summary

Spartan Chassis, Inc. is recalling certain model year 2006 through 2009 Spartan Advantage, Metrostar, Diamond, and Gladiator fire apparatus chassis. The affected vehicles were manufactured between January 1, 2007, and April 15, 2010, and are equipped with independent front suspensions supplied by Ridewell Corporation.

The recall addresses a defect where bell crank support brackets installed on the suspension cradle may crack or separate from the main structure. This issue may occur because certain welds attaching the brackets were omitted during the manufacturing process. A complete separation of these brackets could cause steering impairment, which might result in a vehicle crash.

Spartan will notify owners and repair the vehicles free of charge. The safety recall began on May 26, 2010. Owners may contact Spartan Chassis at 1-800-543-4277, Option 1, or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
