Micro Bird, Inc. is recalling certain model year 2009 and 2010 Girardin G5, Micro Bird MB II, and G5 school buses manufactured between October 2008 and March 2010. These vehicles are equipped with Ricon Public Use S and K series wheelchair lifts. The recall involves 49 units.
A software defect in the lift's control system may cause the platform to continue moving upward for approximately one second after the operator releases the switch, if the floor level limit switch has not yet been activated. This continued travel may cause the platform to overrun the vehicle floor level and stop at an angle of 15 to 20 degrees. In this position, a person in a wheelchair could tip over, or a person standing on the platform could fall, potentially resulting in injuries.
Micro Bird will notify owners, and authorized Ricon dealers will perform repairs free of charge. As a software solution is currently being developed, Ricon will provide owners with a bulletin outlining proper lift operation and a DVD-based training aid at no cost.
