Mack Heavy Trucks Recalled for Potential Axle Beam Failure
Mack Trucks is recalling certain 2002-2004 heavy trucks because axle beams may have manufacturing defects that could lead to failure and a crash.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (axle beam failure) that can lead to a vehicle crash, which aligns with the rubric criteria for a Severe (4) rating.
Plain-English summary
Mack Trucks, Inc. is recalling certain model year 2002 through 2004 CL, CV, LE, MR, RB, and RD heavy trucks, as well as model year 2003 through 2004 DM heavy trucks. These vehicles were manufactured between February 1, 2002, and September 30, 2003, and are equipped with axle beams manufactured by Bharat Forge.
The axle beams may have transverse shear lines on the bottom resulting from the trimming process. If present, these lines can promote the initiation of cracks, which over time may possibly lead to axle beam failure and a vehicle crash.
Mack will notify owners to inspect and replace any affected axle beams free of charge. The safety recall began on March 5, 2010. Owners may contact Mack at 1-800-866-1177 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
