Yokohama Tires Recalled for Missing Identification Markings
Yokohama is recalling specific Avid H4S tires because they lack required identification markings on one sidewall, which could delay future safety repairs.
What this means for you
Minor labeling or packaging issue, or a voluntary precautionary recall. Risk of harm is low but real — follow the manufacturer's instructions.
Our severity reasoning: The recall addresses a documentation and labeling defect (missing TIN) rather than an active mechanical failure or reported injury, fitting the criteria for moderate severity involving minor labeling errors or low-risk compliance issues.
Plain-English summary
Yokohama Tire Corporation is recalling certain Avid H4S tires, size P215/60R15, manufactured between December 2, 2007, and September 19, 2009. These tires fail to conform to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 139 because the molded markings on one sidewall do not contain the complete Tire Identification Number (TIN) or partial TIN as required.
The missing identification markings could make it difficult for consumers to identify these tires if a safety-related performance issue is discovered in the future. This could result in the tires not being removed from service, potentially increasing the risk of a vehicle crash. NHTSA denied Yokohama's petition for relief from remedy in February 2012, leading to this safety recall campaign.
The recall began on April 27, 2012. Yokohama will notify registered owners and provide free replacement tires. Owners may contact the Yokohama Campaign Service Center at 1-888-801-4162 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
