Plain-English summary
Britax Child Safety, Inc. is recalling certain Chaperon infant car seats manufactured from April 2009 through May 2010. The affected models are E9L69N9 Moonstone, E9L69P2 Red Mill, E9L69P3 Savannah, and E9L69P5 Cowmooflage. A total of 17,251 units are affected by this recall.
The defect involves a chest clip that was incorrectly produced, making it more brittle than intended. This component positions the harness straps across the infant's shoulders. The chest clip may break when engaged as the infant is secured into the car seat.
If the chest clip breaks, the sharp edges could create a risk of skin laceration, and the fractured components may present a small parts or choking hazard. Britax will mail notice and remedy kits containing a replacement chest clip and instruction sheet to consumers. The safety campaign began on November 12, 2010. Owners may contact Britax Customer Service at 1-888-427-4829 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
