Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a fire hazard with reports of minor injuries (singed hair) but no serious injuries or property damage, fitting the 'High' criteria for risk-of-harm products where injury has not yet been reported as serious.
Plain-English summary
Wal-Mart Stores Inc. is recalling approximately 1 million Ozark Trail butane utility lighters in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The recalled lighters, model number HH-133, have a potential defect where the fuel cylinder can crack. This crack allows butane to leak, which can ignite and cause the lighter to continue burning after the trigger is released, exhibit flaring characteristics, or burn with an unsteady flame.
The lighters are about 11 inches long with a black plastic handle, red trigger, and on/off switch. Wal-Mart sold these lighters nationwide from August 1997 through March 1999 for approximately $2 each. The company has received two reports of lighters leaking fuel and igniting, which singed users' facial and arm hair. There have been no reports of serious injuries or property damage.
Consumers should stop using these lighters immediately and return them to the nearest Wal-Mart store for a refund. For more information, consumers can call Wal-Mart at (800) WAL-MART.
