Plain-English summary

Yang Lin Trading Inc. and Wholesale World Inc. are recalling approximately 176,000 sets of miniature Christmas lights in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The recalled products include multicolored strings of 100 lights with five-way flashers, 140 chasing lights with music, and clear or multicolored sets of 50 and 100 lights.

The lights are poorly constructed with undersized wires, lack fuses to protect against overheating, and have wires that can easily pull out of the plugs. These defects present a fire and electrocution hazard. The products do not have certification labels indicating they were tested by an independent testing lab such as Underwriters Laboratories (UL). CPSC has not received any reports of injuries or incidents involving these lights, and the recall is being conducted to prevent the possibility of injury.

The lights were sold in small discount stores in Texas, Pennsylvania, California, Illinois, New York, and Arizona between August 1998 and December 1998 for prices between $3 and $18. Consumers who purchased these recalled Christmas lights should immediately stop using them and may return the products to the place of purchase for a refund.
