Plain-English summary
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Lex Pharmaceutical Inc. of Medley, Florida, is recalling about 25,000 bottles of vitamins and medicines. The recall is necessary because the products do not have child-resistant packaging as required by the Poison Prevention Packaging Act. The affected items include Multigon Junior, Duralgina, Cramps Out, Uni 1 Dose, Lexagran-M Vitamins, Hematinic Beef-Iron and Wine, and Supra-Vita. These products feature plain, screw-on caps and were distributed by various companies including Menper Distributors, Efficient Laboratories, Medley Pharmaceutical, Lex Pharmaceutical, and Carifarma Pharmaceutical Inc.
The recalled products were sold primarily at small pharmacies, discount drug stores, and retail stores in Puerto Rico, New York, Florida, and the Southeastern United States from January 1996 through June 1997. The products were generally sold for about $5. If accidentally swallowed by children, these medicines and supplements can cause serious injury or death. CPSC is not aware of any injuries involving these specific products, but notes that about 50 children die each year from poisoning after swallowing medicines and other toxic substances.
Consumers should immediately discontinue use of the recalled products and return them to the store where purchased for a full refund. For more information, consumers can call Lex Pharmaceutical at (800) 522-5712 between 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. EDT Monday through Friday.
