What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a fire hazard with two reported incidents of the product catching fire, but no injuries were reported, fitting the criteria for a risk-of-harm product where injury has not yet been reported.
Plain-English summary
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and The Pfaltzgraff Co. are issuing a safety alert for approximately 123,500 Pfaltzgraff pizza stones and deep dish pizza stones. The recall is due to a potential fire hazard associated with the original instruction booklets. If consumers use oil on the stones and clean them using a 550-degree Fahrenheit oven or the oven's self-cleaning cycle, as previously recommended, the stones can catch on fire.
Pfaltzgraff has received two reports of pizza stones catching on fire due to these incorrect cleaning instructions. No injuries were reported in connection with these incidents. The affected products are made of unglazed clay and were sold at Pfaltzgraff outlet stores and department stores nationwide for approximately $20. The standard pizza stone has been sold since 1993, and the deep dish version since 1995.
Consumers should immediately destroy the original instruction booklets. New instruction booklets are available by calling Pfaltzgraff at (800) 999-2811 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. EDT, Monday through Friday. The revised instructions specify using the stones only for pizza or bread, not exceeding 425 degrees Fahrenheit, and cleaning by placing them on the bottom rack of a 425-degree oven for four hours before scouring with baking soda. Consumers may also return the stones for a full refund by contacting Pfaltzgraff for shipping instructions.
