CPSC Recalls Over 122,000 Go-Karts with Exposed Rear Axles

The affected models include the Avenger Yellow Jacket, Bob's Kart Shop Grasshoper, Ground Hawg, and T.C. Go-Fur, Kartco and Roadboss, Ken-Bar Streaker, Sand Dog, Salute to America, Scorpion, and Mud Hog, Minat U.S. Eagle Series, and T&D Metal Products Klipper Karts, ProKart, Pathwinder, Kool Kart Campout, and Bird. These one- and two-seat gasoline-powered go-karts were sold nationwide from August 1976 through March 1997 for approximately $500 to $2,500.
The recall is necessary because riders can be seriously injured or killed if their long hair or clothing becomes entangled in the rotating rear axle. Since July 1996, CPSC has received reports of one child who died and two children who were seriously injured in go-karts with this hazard, as well as one report of an adult who was seriously injured when her hair became entangled in the rotating rear axle of a T&D Metal Products go-kart.
Consumers should stop using these go-karts immediately. To determine if a go-kart is affected, consumers should stand behind the vehicle with the engine off and push it by hand; if the axle connecting the two rear wheels is visible while rotating, the go-kart is subject to the recall. Consumers should contact the appropriate manufacturer to receive a free axle guard kit with installation instructions. If the manufacturer is out of business or if consumers have questions, they should call the CPSC Hotline at (800) 638-2772.
