Plain-English summary
Schumacher Electric Corp. is recalling approximately 100,000 Sears DieHard Fully Automatic Battery Charger Engine Starters in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The recall involves model number 200.71310, which was manufactured between January 1996 and February 1997. These units were sold at Sears Automotive Centers, Sears Hardware stores, and Sears Dealer stores for approximately $65.
The battery chargers have a wiring connection that could short, causing the transformer to overheat. This defect poses a potential fire hazard. CPSC is aware of one alleged incident of a fire involving this battery charger, but no injuries resulted. Consumers can identify affected units by the model number on the front and a date code (H961 through H972) molded into the plastic base on the bottom. Chargers with a white sticker displaying number 1682 on the back have already been modified and are not part of this recall.
Consumers should immediately stop using these battery chargers. They should return the units to the nearest Sears Auto Center, Sears Hardware store, or Sears Dealer store for a free replacement. For more information, consumers can call 1-800-SEARS64.
