Wagner Spray Tech Corp. is repairing approximately 44,000 units of the Wagner Power Steamer wallpaper steamer, model 700, in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The recall addresses a defect where steam and hot water can forcefully escape from the unit when the filler cap is opened under certain conditions.
Wagner has received five reports of first- and second-degree burn injuries to consumers' hands, arms, legs, and feet resulting from the forcefully escaping steam and hot water. The affected steamers are primarily gray and black plastic units with a round 1-gallon water container, an 11.5-foot hose, and a yellow filler cap. They were sold at hardware and home supply stores nationwide from July 1994 through February 1997 for about $70.
Consumers should immediately stop using the steamers and contact Wagner at (800) 686-8525 or write to 1770 Fernbrook Lane, Plymouth, Minn. 55447 to receive a free replacement hose and filler cap. The repair involves replacing the old hose and filler cap with the new ones at home.
