The recall covers all Peak 1 22-oz. fuel bottles manufactured during the first six months of 1996. The affected red-canistered bottles can be identified by a "1-96" date code stamped into the bottom.

CPSC and Coleman have received no reports of injuries. The recall is being conducted to prevent the possibility of injury. Consumers could have purchased the defective bottles individually or with Peak 1 Apex stoves. Sporting goods stores and catalogs specializing in backpacking, mountain climbing, and camping equipment sold the bottles from May 1996 through September 1996 for $12.50 each.

Consumers who have Peak 1 22-oz. fuel bottles should stop using them immediately. They should call the Coleman Company at (800) 257-5299 or write to P.O. Box 2931, Wichita, KS 67201 for instructions on disposing of the defective bottles and replacing them at no charge.
