Plain-English summary
Kmart Corporation is voluntarily recalling 23,000 Young Classics rompers for infant girls in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The recall was initiated after a consumer reported that paint was chipping from the buttons after washing the garments. The paint on the buttons contains an excessive level of lead, which violates the Consumer Product Safety Act.
The affected rompers are short-sleeve, crew-neck styles available in white with pink flowers or white with blue flowers. They were sold in sizes 12 months, 18 months, and 24 months. Each garment features three shiny plastic buttons on the front, each approximately 0.5 inches in diameter. Sewn-in tags identify the product as "YOUNG CLASSICS (TM) 60% COTTON 40% POLYESTER RN # 42000 BANGLADESH," and the style number 1832 appears on the hang tags.
Kmart sold these rompers nationwide for $6.99 from January 1996 through April 1996 in the Kidsworld department. Kmart and CPSC are not aware of any injuries involving the garments, but the recall is being conducted to prevent the possibility of injury. Consumers should return the rompers to any Kmart store for a full refund or contact Kmart's toll-free customer service line at (800) 63KMART for more information.
