Plain-English summary
Waring Products is voluntarily recalling about 2,700 "Dualit-Plus" electronic toasters that present a possible fire hazard. The recalled units are two-slice and four-slice models manufactured in England by Dualit Ltd. and imported by Waring Products for distribution in the United States. These toasters were sold nationwide through Williams-Sonoma catalogs and retail stores from October 1993 through September 1994, with a small number also sold at the Waring Products retail outlet in New Hartford, Connecticut.
The hazard involves the toasters turning on by themselves after interruptions in electrical power. Waring has received six reports of this issue, two of which involved singeing or scorching of areas adjacent to the toasters. No fires or injuries have been reported to date. The specific units involved bear serial numbers between 310 and 408 on the baseplate. The two-slice model (sold for $215) has baseplate numbers "CTS2E/DOM and 11EA36," while the four-slice model (sold for $299) has baseplate numbers "CTS4E/DOM and 11EA42." Only Dualit-Plus electronic toasters with the letter "E" as the fifth digit of the model number are included in this recall; models with manually operated timers are not affected.
Consumers who own a recalled Dualit-Plus electronic toaster should immediately unplug the unit and call Waring toll-free at (800) 831-3960. Waring will send a package to ship the toaster back free-of-charge and will arrange for pickup at the owner's convenience. Owners can choose to have the toaster repaired, in which case they will receive a $25 Williams-Sonoma gift certificate, or receive a refund. Customers who purchased the toaster through the Williams-Sonoma catalog have been notified by mail.
