The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is recalling more than 100 series CTH-10 and CTH-40 tankless electric water heaters manufactured by Productos Electricos Corona Ltd. of Sao Paulo, Brazil. These units were imported in the late 1980s by Pecbras of Dania, Florida, and in 1989 and 1990 by Host Products Inc. of Laquana Hills, California. The heaters were sold to GAR Services of St. Croix, Virgin Islands; G.C. Enterprises of Belmont, New Hampshire; and individual consumers, primarily in the southeastern United States and the Virgin Islands.
A design defect in the pressure switches may cause these heaters to explode and catch fire. CPSC learned of the issue after a consumer reported that three of his five water heaters exploded and caught fire. No injuries have been reported to date.
Because both importers have gone out of business, there is no refund or repair program available. Consumers should stop using these water heaters immediately and have them replaced by a plumber, as the defective units cannot be repaired.
