These beige-colored hair dryers have the words "MODEL PRO1600" embossed on the handle. The recall specifically affects units with black fans; hair dryers with gray fans, which were manufactured after August 7, 1993, are not involved.
The hazard exists because when the hair dryer is plugged in and turned "OFF," the heater could turn on by itself without activating the fan. Some of these units have heater motor mounts molded from flammable material that could catch fire. The company is aware of three alleged fire incidents involving these hair dryers, but no injuries have been reported to date.
Consumers who have beige Model PRO1600 hair dryers with black fans should immediately stop using them and discard or destroy them. The manufacturer, Hartman Products, is out of business and cannot be contacted.
