Plain-English summary
Venmar Ventilation Inc. is recalling approximately 32,000 heat recovery ventilators manufactured between October 2006 and August 2007. The recall involves units sold under various brand names, including Venmar, Flair, Conformax, NuTone, Carrier Bryant, Payne, Heil, York, Sears, Rheem, Ruud, Protech, and Weatherking. The specific model numbers are listed on a silver or black label on the outside panel of the unit.
The hazard exists because the motors in these units can overheat, posing a fire risk. Venmar Ventilation has received four reports of ventilator motors overheating, resulting in fires that caused extensive property damage. One incident in Michigan reportedly resulted in about $1 million in damages.
These ventilators were sold nationwide through heating, plumbing, and building supply distributors from January 1991 through December 2001 for between $700 and $2,500. Consumers should immediately turn off and unplug their ventilators. They should then contact Venmar Ventilation to schedule an inspection and repair.
