B.J. Alan Recalls Phantom Cosmic Eruption Fireworks Due to Tip-Over Risk
B.J. Alan Company is recalling Phantom Cosmic Eruption fireworks that may tip over and fire horizontally, posing a serious injury risk.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product where the specific device has not caused reported injuries, but the hazard type (tip-over causing horizontal firing) is associated with known fatalities in similar products, fitting the 'High' criteria for risk-of-harm products where injury has not yet been reported for the specific unit.
Plain-English summary
The B.J. Alan Company is voluntarily recalling its Phantom Cosmic Eruption seven-shot rack fireworks display devices in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The devices may tip over during operation and fire their charges horizontally or at various angles, which could result in serious injury to persons nearby. Although the CPSC is not aware of any incidents involving this specific product, the Commission notes that two deaths have occurred involving other multiple-shot devices that tipped over and struck victims.
Approximately 2,600 of these devices were distributed nationwide from January 1993 to June 1993 through distributors in Hawaii, Indiana, Kansas, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Wisconsin. The devices were imported from China and retailed for approximately $30.00 each. Each device consists of seven 10-inch mortar tubes with a connecting single fuse and is 6-1/2 inches in diameter.
Consumers are urged to stop using these fireworks devices immediately. They are encouraged to return the devices to the stores or stands where purchased for a full refund. If the stands are no longer open or if consumers have other questions, they should contact the B.J. Alan Company at 1-800-777-1691.
