The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is recalling General Sportcraft Ltd. and Foremost Sports Company "Batting Tee" games sold nationwide since January 1991. The products were sold under the "Sportcraft" and "Wilson" names in various department and athletic stores. Approximately 153,000 sets were sold. The recalled games have the word "Sportcraft" or "Wilson" embossed on the top of the base. Specific model numbers include Wilson 96010 and Sportcraft 06650.
The recall is due to a hazard where the metal washer that holds the elastic cord may suddenly fly out of the slit in the rubber base when a child pulls on the ball or cord during normal use. This can strike a nearby player. CPSC has one report that a child was rendered legally blind in one eye after being struck by the washer.
Consumers should discontinue using the Batting Tees immediately. They should return the tethered ball, with the washer attached, to the stores where purchased for a cash refund. Consumers can also return the items to General Sportcraft/Foremost at 140 Woodbine Street, Bergenfield, NJ 07621, for a $5.00 refund per item.
