CPSC Recalls 900,000 Toy Basketball Sets Due to Strangulation Hazard
Franklin Sports, Huffy Sports, and Lifetime Products are recalling 900,000 toy basketball sets because nets can unhook and cause strangulation.
What this means for you

Plain-English summary
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and manufacturers Franklin Sports, Huffy Sports, and Lifetime Products are recalling approximately 900,000 toy and youth basketball sets. The recall involves the "Slam Dunk Youth Basketball Set" by Franklin Sports, the "Youth One-On-One" by Huffy Sports, and the "Shoot Case" by Lifetime Products. These sets were sold nationwide in toy, sporting goods, mass merchandise, and discount department stores between 1993 and 1999 for prices ranging from $13 to $40.
The recall is due to a strangulation hazard. The nylon nets on these sets can unhook from the rim or have knots that slide, creating loops or openings. If a child puts their head into these openings, the net can become tangled around their neck. Franklin Sports has received one report of a 3-year-old boy getting his head and neck caught in a basketball net, though no injuries have been reported. Huffy Sports and Lifetime Products have received no incident reports.
Consumers should remove and throw away nets that can unhook or have knots that slide. The manufacturers will send new nets that securely attach to the rim and do not have sliding knots. Consumers should not return the product to stores. The basketball set can be used without a net until the replacement arrives.
