What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural defect leading to explosion hazards with reported injury (minor burns) and potential for severe injuries like blindness, meeting the criteria for 'Severe' (significant injury reports/structural defect).

Plain-English summary

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is recalling Micro-Dome Food Preservers manufactured by Micro-Dome of San Ramon, CA. These appliances, used in microwave ovens to preserve fruits, vegetables, and prepared dishes, were sold to consumers after August 1987. Approximately 18,600 units were sold, generally priced at $50.

The recall addresses two primary hazards. First, the plastic container may explode if the vent stem or safety release becomes plugged, or if the container is hit, dropped, or develops cracks (crazing). Micro-Dome reported 29 incidents of cracking or crazing, eight incidents of the top blowing off, and four incidents of the vent being plugged. One user reported minor burns from the top blowing off. Second, the CPSC is concerned about potential food poisoning, including botulism, because the product and its instructions may not adequately ensure the safety of canned foods. University of California researchers found that bacteria survived the canning process, although Micro-Dome denies a food poisoning problem.

Consumers should stop using the Micro-Dome Food Preserver immediately. They are urged to destroy all food preserved using the device. To receive a $50 rebate, consumers should return the preserver to Micro-Dome or call 1-800-736-2330 for instructions. Alternatively, the device should be destroyed in a manner that prevents future use.
