Whirlpool is retrofitting specific below-counter dishwashers sold in Kentucky, Illinois, and Indiana to replace a pushbutton switch that may short-circuit and cause a fire.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a fire hazard with 45 reported fires, nine of which spread outside the appliance, meeting the rubric criteria for significant injury/property-damage reports.
Plain-English summary
Whirlpool is recalling specific models of below-the-counter dishwashers sold in Kentucky, Illinois, and Indiana. The affected models are DU7400-O, DU7600XS-0, DU9000XR-0, and DU9000XR-1, which were sold after February 1986. The model and serial numbers can be found on a plate on the right front edge of the tub after the door is opened.
The recall is necessary because the appliance's pushbutton switch may short-circuit, creating a possible fire hazard. Whirlpool has reported 45 fires associated with this defect, nine of which spread outside the appliance. This is a second recall notice issued by the company due to poor consumer response to an initial notice in August 1988.
Consumers in the tri-state area who have not been contacted by Whirlpool should call 1-800-541-5746 to arrange for free service to replace the switch. Until the repair is completed, owners should not use the appliance. As a temporary safety measure, the power should be turned off or the dishwasher door should be left unlatched.
