The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Ace Novelty Company are recalling Ace Koala Bear Fur Banks. These novelty banks, which are six-inch tall koala bears covered in fur, were distributed at carnivals and fairs in the northeastern United States during the summer of 1988. The banks were imported from Korea and identified by U.S. Customs Service at the Port of Seattle, Washington, during a joint surveillance program with CPSC.
The recall is issued because the yellow plastic eyes and black plastic noses of the bears can be pulled off. These small parts may be ingested or choked on, presenting a serious choking hazard to young children.
Consumers are advised to either destroy the banks or remove and destroy both the eyes and the nose. The banks feature a paper label on the chest reading "I AM A BANK" and have a coin slot hidden in the fur on the back of the bear's head.
