The recall is due to a potential fire hazard. The company has received 16 complaints that the train sets short-circuit, causing the coal tender car to overheat. While no injuries have been reported, consumers have reported nine incidents of the train catching fire. The issue involves specific wire plug connectors between the coal tender car and the locomotive that transmit power current. Train sets manufactured and shipped in 1987 and 1988 use a different plastic connector plug with no metal prong and are not affected.
