The affected furnaces were produced for mobile homes before December 1971. Investigations indicate that no single factor is solely responsible for the incidents; rather, they involved a combination of improper maintenance, installation errors, or alterations to the furnace. Although approximately 380,000 units were manufactured between 1964 and 1971, it is unlikely all remain operational.

Mobile home owners should check their gas furnaces for the Coleman brand name on the front and identify the Model 8600 Solar Pak by checking the rating plate inside the furnace door. If the furnace matches this model or if the owner is uncertain, they should call Coleman's toll-free hotline at 1-800-232-SOLR to arrange an inspection. Coleman is offering a free cooler to encourage participation, along with up to a 50% discount on critical replacement parts or a new replacement furnace.
