These toys, identified as product no. 97-S-510, were sold in Eagle Family Discount Stores in Florida, Alabama, and Georgia during the 1976 and 1977 Christmas seasons. The toys were made in Hong Kong or Taiwan and retailed for about $1.27.
The recall is due to a hazard of eye injury. If a child removes the muzzle end of the gun barrel, the plastic plunger caps covering two metal rods can be removed with a force of three or four pounds. This leaves the metal rod ends exposed. If the toy is cocked and discharged, the exposed metal rods can be propelled forward into a child's face or eyes. CPSC is aware of one incident where a three and one-half-year-old boy suffered an eye injury from an unprotected metal rod.
Consumers should not let their children play with these toys. They should return the toy to their nearest Eagle Family Discount Store for a full refund. The toy features "Gun Fighter" in silver on each side, a brown stock, black barrels, and a chrome-colored plastic cocking lever. The package includes a cautionary statement that the toy is not recommended for children under five years of age.
