Plain-English summary
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and La Cibeles, Inc. are recalling approximately 38,000 La Cibeles Chupetes baby pacifiers. The recall covers four series: Fauna, Flower, Texas, and Navy. These pacifiers are imported from Spain and were sold for approximately 45 cents in plastic and cardboard casings.
The recall was initiated after the death of a five-month-old boy in New York in mid-February 1976. The child died from complications ensuing from asphyxia after the pacifier's plastic shield caught in his throat. The pacifiers feature a one-inch soft rubber nipple and a flexible plastic saucer-shaped shield. The handles are shaped like an animal head, a flower, a baby with a cowboy hat, or a baby with a sailor cap.
The pacifiers were distributed in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Maryland, Florida, and Puerto Rico. Approximately 130,000 of the original 168,000 units had already been returned to La Cibeles since February 1976. Consumers who suspect they have these pacifiers should immediately remove them from their child's possession and return them to the place of purchase for a refund.
