Balloon Time Mini Helium Tanks Recalled Due to Projectile Injury Risk
Approximately 121,100 Balloon Time Mini Helium Tanks are being recalled because compressed helium can escape and cause the plastic cap to be ejected, potentially striking users or bystanders. No injuries have been reported.
What this means for you
Minor labeling or packaging issue, or a voluntary precautionary recall. Risk of harm is low but real — follow the manufacturer's instructions.
Our severity reasoning: The hazard involves potential injury from projectiles, but the source explicitly states no injuries have been reported. This is a precautionary recall addressing a theoretical risk without documented harm, placing it in the Moderate category per the severity rubric.
Plain-English summary
Worthington Industries Inc. is recalling approximately 121,100 Balloon Time Mini Helium Tanks. These tanks are approximately 13.5 inches tall by 3.5 inches in diameter, have a red label and purple cap, and hold 5.8 cubic feet of helium/air mixture. They are designed to fill up to 20 balloons with helium.
The tanks pose an injury hazard because compressed helium can escape unexpectedly and cause the plastic cap to be released into the air. This can result in projectiles striking users and bystanders. No injuries have been reported to date.
The affected tanks were sold at Meijer, Cool Kat Party Warehouse, Bradley Party and Variety, Ultimate Party Super Store, RSVP Food and Party Outlet, Party Center and select Party City stores nationwide, and online at Amazon.com from April 2023 through October 2023 for between $30 and $48.
Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled tanks. They should point the tank away from themselves and others, carefully remove the plastic safety seal and cap, and release all helium in a well-ventilated area. Consumers should then clearly write their name, "RECALLED," and the destruction code on the front of the tank with a non-erasable marker. To obtain a full refund, consumers should register online at www.recallrtr.com/miniheliumtank and upload a photo of their product, then properly discard the tank after receiving the refund.
