Clorox is recalling Pine-Sol cleaners contaminated with Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a bacteria that risks serious infection in immunocompromised people or those with external medical devices. No illnesses have been reported to date.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: Testing identified actual bacterial contamination (Pseudomonas aeruginosa) in recalled products, not a theoretical hazard. However, no illnesses or injuries have been reported. The affected population—immunocompromised individuals and those with external medical devices—face documented risk of serious infection, meeting the rubric criterion for Score 3.
Plain-English summary
Clorox is recalling Pine-Sol Scented Multi-Surface Cleaners (Lavender Clean, Sparkling Wave, and Lemon Fresh scents), CloroxPro Pine-Sol All Purpose Cleaners (Lavender Clean, Sparkling Wave, Lemon Fresh, and Orange Energy scents), and Clorox Professional Pine-Sol Lemon Fresh Cleaners. The recall affects products with date codes beginning with 'A4' followed by a five-digit number less than 22249, manufactured between January 2021 and September 2022. Testing has identified bacterial contamination, specifically Pseudomonas aeruginosa, an environmental organism found in soil and water. Original Pine-Sol in Pine scent is not included in this recall.
People with healthy immune systems are typically unaffected by Pseudomonas aeruginosa. However, those with weakened immune systems or external medical devices face a risk of serious infection that may require medical treatment if exposed. The bacteria can enter the body through inhalation, the eyes, or through breaks in the skin. No illnesses have been reported so far.
Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled products and dispose of them in their original containers with household trash.
