Swift Industries Recalls 9-Inch Rubber Straps for Bicycle Bags

Swift Industries is recalling 9-inch rubber straps used to fasten bicycle bags because the straps can break, causing the bag to fall and creating a crash hazard to riders. No injuries have been reported.

What this means for you

Minor labeling or packaging issue, or a voluntary precautionary recall. Risk of harm is low but real — follow the manufacturer's instructions.

Our severity reasoning: Although the hazard involves a crash risk, no injuries have been reported despite 129 failure reports, making this a theoretical risk rather than a demonstrated one. This is a voluntary precautionary recall by the manufacturer, and the absence of reported harm coupled with the non-imminent nature of the hazard places it in the Moderate category.

Plain-English summary

Swift Industries Designs LLC of Seattle, Washington is recalling approximately 1,800 units of 9-inch black rubber Swift Straps. These straps fasten bicycle bags to bicycles and were sold with the Swift Zeitgeist Pack, Catalyst Pack, Kestrel Handlebar Bag, Bandito Bicycle Bag, and Handlebar Foam Spacer Kits, as well as individually. The straps have a fox graphic stamped near the buckle.

The rubber straps can break, causing the attached bicycle bag to come loose and fall. This poses a crash hazard and injury hazard to the rider. The firm has received 129 reports of strap failure, though no injuries have been reported to date.

The straps were sold at REI and EVO sporting goods stores, various bicycle shops, and online retailers including builtbyswift.com, rei.com, huckberry.com, and evo.com between March 2022 and July 2022. Individual straps were priced between $5 and $10, and when sold as part of a bicycle bag, between $100 and $200.
