4moms MamaRoo and RockaRoo Baby Swings and Rockers Strangulation Hazard

4moms is recalling over 2 million MamaRoo baby swings and 220,000 RockaRoo rockers because dangling restraint straps pose a strangulation hazard to crawling infants. One death has been reported.

What this means for you

Highest-severity recall. Risk of serious injury or death is documented or strongly suspected. Stop using the product now and follow the agency's instructions.

Our severity reasoning: A known fatality has been reported—a 10-month-old infant died from asphyxiation. Per the severity rubric, any recall with reported deaths receives a Critical (5) rating regardless of other factors.

Plain-English summary

4moms, of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is recalling more than 2 million MamaRoo baby swings (versions 1.0 through 4.0) and 220,000 RockaRoo baby rockers. These products were sold at BuyBuy Baby, Target stores nationwide, and online at 4moms.com and Amazon from January 2010 through August 2022 for between $160 and $250. An additional 60,000 MamaRoo and 10,000 RockaRoo units were sold in Canada.

When the swing or rocker is not in use, the restraint straps can dangle below the seat. Non-occupant crawling infants can become entangled in these dangling straps, posing a strangulation hazard.

4moms has received two reports of entanglement incidents involving infants who became caught in the strap under an unoccupied MamaRoo swing after crawling under the seat. One incident involved a 10-month-old infant who died from asphyxiation. Another involved a 10-month-old infant who suffered bruising to his neck before being rescued by a caregiver. No incidents involving the RockaRoo have been reported.

Consumers with infants who can crawl should immediately stop using the recalled swings and rockers and place them in an area where crawling infants cannot access them. Consumers should contact 4moms immediately to register for a free strap fastener that will prevent the straps from extending under the swing when not in use. 4moms can be reached toll-free at 877-870-7390 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, by email at [email protected], or online at https://www.4momsrecall.expertinquiry.com or https://www.4moms.com by clicking on SAFETY & RECALL at the top of the page.
