Plain-English summary

Drive DeVilbiss Healthcare is recalling approximately 496,100 adult portable bed rails sold in the United States (plus 68,000 units in Canada and 119 units in Mexico) due to a serious entrapment hazard. The recalled models are: 15064 (Bed Assist Handle), 15062 (Bed Assist Rail with Folding Board), RTL15073 (Home Bed Assist Handle), and RTL15063-ADJ (Home Bed Assist Handle Adjustable Height).

When attached to an adult's bed, users can become entrapped within the bed rail or between the rail and the side of the mattress, creating a risk of death by asphyxiation. Drive has received two reports of entrapment deaths: one involving a 93-year-old woman in California in February 2011, and one involving a 92-year-old man at an assisted living facility in Canada in February 2015.

The bed rails were sold from October 2007 through December 2021 for between $30 and $80 at medical supply stores nationwide and online through Amazon and Walmart. Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled bed rails and contact Drive DeVilbiss Healthcare at 877-467-3099 (Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. ET) or visit www.drivemedical.com to receive a full refund.
