Rhino Metals Recalls Bighorn Handgun Safes Due to Security Flaw

Rhino Metals is recalling Bighorn P-20 handgun security safes because they can be opened without a combination, posing a serious risk of injury to children and others.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product (firearm security) where injury has not yet been reported, which aligns with the High severity criteria for theoretical hazards without confirmed illness or injury.

Plain-English summary

Rhino Metals Inc. is recalling approximately 400 Bighorn P-20 handgun security safes. The gray and black metal safes measure about 3.25 inches high by 12 inches wide by 10.5 inches deep and weigh about 15 pounds. They feature a blue Bighorn logo and a four-button, back-lit electronic key pad on the top. The recalled units have serial numbers 1412160001 through 1412163000 printed on a sticker on the right-hand side.

The recall is being conducted because the safes can be opened without the use of a combination. This defect allows unauthorized access to a handgun, posing a serious risk of injury to children and others. No injuries have been reported in connection with this recall.

The safes were sold nationwide from March 2015 through March 2016 for about $75 at retailers including Canyon Sports, Coastal Farm & Ranch, Dean Safes, High Noble Safe, Co., North River Customs, and other stores. Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled handgun safes and contact Rhino Metals for instructions on how to return the safe for a full refund.
