GE Recalls Zoneline Air Conditioners and Heating Units Due to Fire Risk

GE Appliances is recalling approximately 33,500 Zoneline Packaged Terminal Air Conditioners (PTAC) and heating units. These units are commonly used in hotels, apartment buildings, and commercial spaces. The recall involves specific models and serial numbers, which are printed on the rating plate located behind the front panel of the unit.
The hazard exists because moisture from outdoor air can accumulate near the heater when the unit is operated with the vent door continuously open. This moisture, combined with two shorted electrical components, can create an electrical ground path and arcing, posing a risk of fire. GE has received three reports involving smoke and/or fire associated with the unit's heater, resulting in approximately $30,000 in property damage. No injuries have been reported.
These units were sold nationwide through GE authorized representatives and HVAC distributors from January 2010 through December 2013 for between $1,000 and $1,200. Consumers should contact GE to schedule a free repair. Until the repair is completed, do not operate the PTAC unit with the external vent open. Property maintenance personnel should remove the unit's front panel and ensure the vent door control lever on the left side is in the closed position.
